My plans to retrace Captain Cook's unfinished voyage have been postponed a year while I work on the next Marine Diesel Basics book and get my new boat SV Oceandrifter ready for sea.
Storms at sea are likely to be only a small part of the total experience of even long-distance sailing, but it’s what most non-sailors immediately ask about and what novice sailors most worry about. Not surprising because the experience of high winds and big seas is likely to be both terrifying and exhilerating.
Here’s a really good short video of a 12-metre (35-foot) yacht going downwind in difficult circumstances. It gives some idea of what the motion can be like – actually it feels even more extreme on the boat itself.
